A Widespread Problem
TITANIUM
Titanium is a light, strong, gray-white metal with notable corrosion resistant
properties. It has the highest strength to weight ratio of any metal. Accordingly
titanium metal has many uses including in sporting equipment, artificial joints and
a variety of alloys used in the aerospace industry. Its main compound, titanium
dioxide is used in the manufacture of paper and plastics and as a pigment and
opacifier in most paints; titanium dioxide pigment accounts for more than 90%
of the consumption of titanium minerals. Titanium is found in the minerals rutile
and ilmenite which occur in igneous rocks, from which the eroded grains may be
concentrated by wind or water to form heavy mineral or mineral sand ores.
Both chloride and sulphate processes are used to extract titanium from ilmenite.
Titanium is not an essential element for humans, and is non-toxic.
