for estimating emissions where the relationship between emission and substance use is
well known. Emission factors are widely used in estimating emissions from combus-
tion sources, and as such are at the centre of the current greenhouse gas emission debate.
Carbon credits are commonly based on differences in greenhouse gas emissions factors
for different fuels.
Emission factors are derived from direct measurements of actual emissions from a
range of similar plants. While emission factors may be empirical, they are based on stand-
ard equipment and operating practices. Emission factors are also supported by engineering
calculations. Eventually, however, emission factors are industry-averaged data, and as such
are less accurate than direct measurements.
