There is a wide range of books on Budapest available in the city, particularly architec-

ART, ARCHITECTURE AND PHOTOGRAPHY
OurBudapest .Averyinformativeseriesofpocket-sizebooks:writteninHungarianandEng-
lish by experts in their fields, and published by Budapest City Hall, they cover the city's ar-
chitecture, baths and parks, and are very cheap, though unfortunately the standard of English
varies.
Irén Ács Hungary at Home . Excellent collection of photos covering all walks of life in
postwar Hungary. Her other books, including Rendezvous , are also worth looking out for in
bookshops.
Bruno Bourel & Lajos Parti Nagy Lightscapes . One of the most interesting collections
of photos available. Taken around the city by Bourel, a sharp-eyed French photographer who
has lived there for many years, they are accompanied by words from a leading contemporary
Hungarian writer.
BobDent Budapest: A Cultural and Literary History. A wide-ranging background to the city
by an English journalist who has lived in Budapest for many years.
Györgyi Éri et al A Golden Age: Art and Society in Hungary 1896-1914. Hungary's Art
Nouveau age captured in a beautifully illustrated coffee-table volume.
JánosGerle et al Budapest: An Architectural Guide. The best of the small new guides to
the city's twentieth-century architecture, covering almost 300 buildings, with brief descrip-
tions in Hungarian and English.
Ruth Gruber Jewish Heritage Travel: A Guide to Central and Eastern Europe. The most
comprehensive guide to Jewish sights in Budapest and elsewhere.
Edwin Heathcote Budapest: A Guide to Twentieth-Century Architecture. A useful and in-
formative pocket guide to the city, though with some curious omissions.
Tamás Hofer et al. Hungarian Peasant Art. An excellently produced examination of Hun-
garian folk art, with lots of good photos.
ImreMóra Budapest Then and Now. A personal and very informative set of accounts of life
in the capital, past and present.
