Palatinus Strand XIII, Margit-sziget 1 236 0040; map . Set among a sprawling park
halfway up the island on the west side, the Palatinus is the city's most popular pool, with a
large outdoor set of pools, including a wave pool and children's pools, all set in a big expanse
of grass. Other facilities include football pitches and volleyball courts, as well as snack bars.
The sunroof above the changing rooms is something of a gay centre. Daily May-mid Sept
9am-7pm, mid-June-mid-Aug 9am-8pm; Mon-Fri 2600ft with locker; Mon-Thurs after

Rác Gyógyfürdő I, Hadnagy utca 8-10; map . One of the oldest baths - the medieval King
Mátyás is said to have used the baths on this site in the Tabán - but nothing remains from
those times. It has been closed for several years, pending the completion of the new Rácz
Hotel & Spa complex.
RudasGyógyfürdő I, Döbrentei tér 9 1 356 1010; map . One of the city's original Turkish
baths, at the Buda end of the Erzsébet híd, this is at its best when the sun shines through the
holes in the dome to light up the beautiful interior. The steam baths were for many years a
male preserve, but women now get a day to themselves (Tues). There's an apron system in
the steam section on single-sex days, but swimming costumes are compulsory on mixed days
(Fri night, Sat & Sun). There is also a nineteenth-century swimming pool, open to both sexes,
to the left of the main entrance - normal swimwear compulsory here. Daily 6am-8pm, plus
Fri & Sat night swimming 10pm-4am; Mon-Fri 3000Ft, Sat & Sun 3300Ft, Fri & Sat night
3700Ft.
Széchenyi Fürdő XIV, Állatkerti körút 11 1 363 3210; map . A magnificent nineteenth-
century complex in the Városliget, with its entrance opposite the entrance to the Budapest
Circus. There are sixteen pools in all, including the various medicinal sections, but you'll
probably use just the three outdoor ones: the hot pool where people play chess (bring your
own chess set if you want to play); a pool for swimming (bathing caps compulsory); and
a whirlpool. Across the far side of the hot pool from the changing rooms is a mixed sauna
with a maze of hot and cold pools. Go before 8am if you want to avoid the tourist rush. Staff
speak good English, guide you through the locker and cabin system and also tell you about
treatments you can get, such as fish pedicures. Mon-Fri 4100Ft for locker, 4600Ft for cabin;
Sat & Sun 4300Ft for locker, 4800Ft for cabin, reductions before 8am and after 5pm. Daily
6am-10pm.
VeliBejFürdő II, Árpád fejedelem útja 7 1 438 8641; map . The sixteenth-century Veli
Bej, the city's oldest Ottoman spa, has finally been restored in a pleasantly simple fashion.
The large central cupola is surrounded by four smaller pools, with adjacent modern steam
chambers, saunas and jacuzzis. The spa is run by a religious order, the Irgalmasok, and the
