BOOKS AND MAPS
Hungarians are a literary bunch and Book Week, held in the capital each June, is a long-
awaited event. If it's old books and prints you want, one of the best places to head for is
Múzeum körút, where there are numerous secondhand bookshops ( antikvárium ) clustered
opposite the Hungarian National Museum. Larger stores often have a café attached and sell a
range of English-language titles.
Alexandra VI, Andrássy út 39 1 484 8000, alexandra.hu ; map . Occupying the magni-
ficent Paris Deparment store, this is the flagship store of the chain, with three vast floors of
browsing; the English language section - with lots of good Hungarian fiction - is to the rear
of the ground floor. While here, it'd be remiss not to visit the sumptuous coffee salon in the
Lotz Hall on the first floor. Its branch by the Dohány utca synagogue at Károly körút 3 has a
secondhand section upstairs as well as a pleasant covered rooftop café. Both branches daily
10am-10pm.
Bestsellers V, Október 6 utca 11 1 312 1295, bestsellers.hu ; map . Budapest's oldest
and best English-language bookshop, with thousands of titles; English and Hungarian lit-
erature, travel and reference, academia and children's books, as well as newspapers and
magazines. Staff are friendly and can order books in. Mon-Fri 9am-6.30pm, Sat 10am-5pm,
Sun 10am-4pm.
CEU bookshop V, Zrinyi utca 12 1 327 3096; map . Just around the corner from Best-
sellers, and attached to the Central European University, this has mainly academic books,
though there is a comprehensive selection of Hungarian literature in English. Mon-Fri
10am-7pm, Sat 11am-3pm.
