Somló is the smallest region, based around a hill west of Balaton whose volcanic soil pro-
duces fascinating results, just as it does around Tokaj; this is a crisp yet rich wine with
a minerally character, and it found favour with Queen Victoria.
Béla Fekete, Imre
Györgykovács, Kolonics.
Tokaj is famed for its incredibly sweet Aszú wines, but the drier Furmint and the fragrant
Hárslevelű (lime or linden leaf), less cloying than the Aszú, are the real surprise. Royal
Tokaj, Disznokő, Oremus and Szepsy (whose wines are brilliant but very pricey), Gizella
pince, Erzsébet pince, Kikelet, Vayi and Berger Zsolt.
Villány, near the Croatian border, was the first region to make its name after 1989. It is
strong on reds, but its rosés are also good. József Bock, Attila Gere and Tiffán, Vylyan
and Sauska, and the smaller names, Jackfall, Ruppert and Balázs Hárságyi.

THE VÁR AND CENTRAL BUDA
Bambi I, Frankel Leó utca 2-4 1 212 3171, facebook.com/bambieszpresszo ; map .
One of the few surviving Socialist-Realist bars, complete with stern waitresses, and old men
chatting and playing dominoes on red plastic-covered tables. It's all straight honest fare, om-
elettes and toasted sandwiches, and none of your fancy coffee here: it is just black, with milk
or with cream. Mon-Fri 7am-10pm, Sat & Sun 9am-10pm.
Lánchíd Söröző I, Fő utca 4 1 214 3144, lanchidsorozo.hu ; map . Handily placed at the
Buda end of the Lánchíd, this chilled little bar is a quiet place in daytime, frequented by tour-
ists and the odd regular, but by sundown the mood is more animated. The owner is a serious
music fan, as the randomly scattered instruments, gig posters, and photos of him with Robert
Plant, BB King et al on the walls testify. Daily 11am-1am.
Szalonspicc II, Lövőház utca 17 0630 861 9006, szalonspicc.hu ; map . Excellent wine,
friendly staff and tasty mini-burgers at this small bar on a buzzy pedestrianized street close
to Széll Kálmán tér. The pavement terrace is standing-room-only in summer. Mon-Sat
noon-midnight, Sun 2-10pm.
