Artigiana Gelati XII, Csaba utca 8 1 212 2439; map . A couple of minutes up the road
from Széll Kálmán tér, this parlour has been concocting fine ice cream for more than twenty
years. A magical assortment of wondrous flavours, such as beetroot, cherry and chilli, and
lavender and rosemary, served up in cones or cups. It also has lactose- and sugar-free gelati .
Tues-Fri 10.30am-8pm, Sat & Sun till 8.30pm.
Auguszt II, Fény utca 8 1 316 3817 augusztcukraszda.hu ; map . Five generations have
been continuing the Auguszt patisserie tradition since 1870, with mainly the women of the
family at the helm. They certainly produce some of Budapest's finest cakes, and you can en-
joy them upstairs or on the terrace out the back. The branch at V, Kossuth Lajos utca 14-16
in the Belváros is open Monday too. Tues-Fri 10am-6pm, Sat 9am-6pm.
Budai Pékség XII, Maros utca 23-25 1 375 5284; map . A great bakery with a couple of
tables that serves sandwiches, cakes, pastries, coffees and surprisingly delicious milk. It is
alsohandyforpicnics inthehills -thebreadisexcellent, andyoucangetdelicious aubergine
and garlic spreads. The sister outlet, Budai Pékség II , at Vársányi Irén utca 21, just below
Széna tér, also sells excellent ice cream. Mon-Fri 7am-7pm, Sat 7am-1pm.
Levendula II, Fény utca, underneath the market levendulafagylaltozo.hu ; map . This new
parlour chain serves some of the best ice cream in town. Flavours include nutella, coconut,
lavender( levendula inHungarian),andmoreintriguingly,camembert.You'llalsofindoutlets
at V, Vámház körút 6, opposite the Great Market Hall, and at V, Szent István körút 21, near
the Margít híd. Daily 11am-9pm.
Marvelosa I, Lánchíd utca 13 1 201 9221 marvelosa.eu ; map . Overlooking the riverside
park between the Lánchíd and restored Várkert Bazár, this sweet little café feels like a very
personal creation. The art on the walls is by the daughter of Ági néni, who presides over
the proceedings. The artistic links continue in the menu and at the tables which each bear an
artist's name rather than a number. They also serve full meals throughout the day. Tues-Sat
10am-10pm, Sun 10am-6pm.
Ruszwurm I, Szentháromság utca 7 1 375 5284; map . Near the Mátyás Church in the Vár,
this diminutive Baroque coffee house can be so packed that it's almost impossible to get a
seat in summer. Still, it's definitely worth seeking out for its coffee and cakes, the pick of
which is its mouth-watering rétes (strudel). Daily 10am-7pm.
