PRIVATE ROOMS AND APARTMENTS
The budget option is a privateroom , bookable through the agencies listed here or the likes
of airbnb, booking.com , etc. You'll also find people touting rooms outside the metro sta-
tion on Deák tér and the nearby Tourinform office, and less commonly at the train stations.
However, while getting a room this way may be cheaper, the chances are that you'll be loc-
ated further out from the centre; in any case, check first.
Depending on location and amenities, prices for a double room start at around 6000Ft a
night, 7500Ft with a bathroom, while a one-bedroom apartment costs upwards of 8000Ft,
two-bedrooms from 13,000Ft. For stays of less than four nights, there's usually a thirty-
percent surcharge, though this is sometimes only applicable on the first night. These days
most of the rooms and apartments are inside or near the Nagykörút - or in Buda close to
the Vár. Families might enjoy the Szent István Park area (the inner XIII district just beyond
the Nagykörút), which has plenty of playgrounds and green space.
Self-contained studio flats or apartments are available to rent through agencies such as
Ibusz, Vista or small To-Ma agency at V, Nádor utca 20 (Mon-Fri 9am-noon, Sat & Sun
9am-5pm; 1353 0819, tomatour.hu ) , and internet-based companies such as Budapest
Lets ( budapestlets.com ) , a UK-Hungarian venture managing about forty well-equipped
properties, from one-room studio flats on Ráday utca to three-bedroom luxury apartments
in the city centre.

CAMPING
Budapest's campsites are generally well equipped and pleasant, with trees, grass and some-
times even a pool. They can get crowded between June and September, when smaller places
might run out of space. It is illegal to camp anywhere else, and the parks are patrolled to en-
force this. The campsites listed here are all in Buda, since the Pest ones are not very inviting.
Expect to pay around €20 per night for two people and a tent and around €25 for a basic two-
bed bungalow.
