map . Opened as the Grand Hotel Royal in 1898, the Corinthia and its concierges enjoy the
idea that this is the inspiration for Wes Anderson's celluloid Grand Budapest Hotel . The im-
posing building was used as offices for some forty years, and it took a major rebuilding pro-
ject - only the facade is original - to turn out four hundred or so rooms with such unbridled
luxury. Many look out onto the main boulevard, though a good number face inwards, over-
looking the splendi d, m arble-tiled atrium. The centrepiece of the hotel's Royal Spa complex
is a stunning pool. €125

Oktogon with the same approach as easyJet, where cheapness and simplicity rule. The a/c
rooms have one bright orange wall and come in two sizes: small (7-9 square metres, enough
room for a bed and your bag, as long as it's not too big); and standard, which has slightly
more space and even a couple of hooks. The en-suite shower/toilets have the feel of an air-
plane cubicle, and, in true Easy style, you pay for everything else, such as TV, internet and
breakfast. There are two larger roo ms with disabled access on the ground floor. Bookable on-
line only, rooms start at around €19 according to demand, but are usually €60-70

ive, four-star hotel that really trades on its location right by the Opera House. Most of its
two-hundred-plus rooms are of average size, b ut th ey are supremely comfortable; around half
have baths, the others showers, some walk-in. €225

Housed in a fine Bauhaus building up near the Városliget (but with easy access to the
Belváros), Mamaison offers luxury accommodation without the corporate feel. The rooms,
some of which have a balcony, are beautifully appointed in silvery-grey tones offset with
splashes of red, while bathrooms feature turquoise and cream patterned tiles. Try and bag one
of the rooms away from busy And rássy út. The tree-shaded terrace is a lovely spot to take in
the first meal of the day (€15). €89

near Oktogon, the three-star hotel's location, good prices and the helpful staff make this a
popular choice. Operating till 1989 as a trade union hostel - its exterior betrays its past - the
Medosz still has simply furnished but pleasant rooms. Most rooms have baths and those with
showers benefit from overlooking the quieter courtyard. The lower floors have family rooms
sleeping up to six people, while the ninth floor rooms have small balconie s. T he four new
rooftop Panorama apartments (€119) have terraces with breathtaking views. €69
