ARRIVAL AND INFORMATION: SZENTENDRE
By train Szentendre is easily accessible by HÉV train from Batthyány tér metro station
(every 20min 6.30am-10pm; 40min). BKK tickets (and Budapest Cards) are valid as far as
the city limits (HÉV station: Békásmegyer), so you will need to buy a supplementary ticket
to cover the remaining part of the journey, or show a BKK pass when buying a ticket at the
station. The station is a 10min walk south of the town centre: cross Dunakanyar körút by sub-
way and continue along Kossuth utca.
Bybus Buses run from Budapest's Újpest-Városkapu bus station to Szentendre's bus station
(30min), next to the HÉV station.
Byboat Excursion boats sail from Vigadó tér at 10am and Batthyány tér at 10.10am, with an
extra boat at 2pm in July & August (May-Sept Tues-Sun; 1hr 30min; 2000Ft; 1 484 4013,
mahartpassnave.hu ) and dock at the Szentendre II landing near the heart of town.
Information Tourinform is at Dumsta Jenő utca 22 (June-Aug Mon-Fri 9.30am-7pm, Sat
& Sun 9am-4pm; Sept-May Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10am-2pm; 26 317 965, szen-
tendre.hu ) ; there's disappointingly little info in English, but you can obtain a map of town
and information on concerts and festivals.
EATING AND DRINKING
Szentendre has stacks of restaurants, though you'd do well to steer clear of those on and
around Fő tér, which are heavily frequented by coach parties, and hence relatively pricey by
Hungarian standards. You'll do better in the backstreets or on Dunakorzó (though it's no less
crowded in summer), or in cafés on the periphery of the centre. The Serbian influence is par-
ticularly strong; look out for traditional dishes such as pljeskavica and cevapi (lamb and beef
burgers or rissoles with diced onion, served in thick, soft pittas).
Aranysárkány Alkotmány utca 1a 26 311 670, aranysarkany.hu . The long-standing and
popular “ Golden Dragon ” serves Hungarian nouvelle cuisine in traditional, folksy surrounds;
try the goose-liver wrapped in bacon with cognac (3900Ft) or the honeyed goose steak with
red cabbage and mashed potatoes (3100Ft). Three-course menu 3800Ft. Booking advisable.
Daily noon-10pm.
Görög Kancsó Dunakorzó 9 26 303 178. A lively, affordable taverna down by the river,
