Szántó Memorial House and Synagogue
Szanto Emlékház és Imaház • Hunyadi utca 2 • Tues-Sun 11am-5pm • Donations accepted
At the far end of Hunyadi utca the SzántóMemorialHouse was set up by the grandson of a
Jewish couple who were among a 250-strong Jewish community in the town that was almost
completely wiped out in the Holocaust. While Budapest has the second largest synagogue in
the world, this one is reputed to be the smallest; the documents and relics inside are few but
they make a moving display
Bogdányi utca
Sloping gently downhill north from Fő tér, Bogdányi utca is packed with craft stalls and
folk-costumed vendors - it's souvenir heaven if you like that kind of thing, though there are
also some more interesting sights along the street's length.
Imre Ámos-Margít Anna Museum
Bogdányi utca 12 • Thurs-Sun 10am-10pm • 600Ft
The ImreÁmos-MargítAnnaMuseum commemorates theworkofapainterlycouple.Imre
Ámos (1907-44) was a distinguished artist who was repeatedly called up on Jewish labour
service from 1940 - painful excerpts from his diary are on display - where he died in 1944,
and the museum presents some of his later works, including the disturbing Apocalypse series
paintedintheyearofhisdeath.Downstairs,hiswife'sworksgofrommellowprewarpictures
to the uncomfortably bright and sometimes grotesque works she painted after the war.
Lázár Cross
Past the Ámos-Anna Museum, Bogdányi utca opens onto a square where the small iron
Lázár Cross honours the Serb king Lázár, whom the Turks beheaded after the Battle of
Kosovo. Lázár's body was buried here by the Serbs, before being taken back to Serbia in
1774. Between March and October, horse-drawn carriages can be rented on Bogdányi utca
for rides round town (from 1000Ft per person for 30min); bargain hard. Nearby is Szen-
tendre's proudest recent addition: a mobile dam , which has reconnected the town with its
river allowing the removal of the old high embankment. Locals now keep their fingers
crossed that it works.
Art Mill
Művészeti-Malom • Bogdányi utca 32 • Tues-Sun 10am-6pm • 1000Ft
Continuing along Bogdányi utca, the Skanzen ház at no. 28 is a bakery selling delicious pro-
duce made in the Open-Air Museum . A short walk further on, the Art Mill is a converted
watermill hosting installations and performance art events. A couple of doors up, at no. 36,
admire the deep blue hues of clothes, tablecloths and bedspreads at the Kovács Blue Dye
Shop , showcasing a traditional style of folk dyeing.
