Ferenczy Károly Museum
Ferenczy Károly Múzeum • Kossuth utca 5 • Tues-Sun 10am-6pm • 1500Ft • 1 20 779 6657, femuz.hu
Heading up Kossuth utca from the HÉV and bus stations, you come to the splendid Ferenczy
Károly Museum , which houses the oeuvre of the extraordinarily prolific Ferenczy family.
Károly Ferenczy (1862-1917) pioneered Impressionism and plein air painting in Hungary,
as beautifully demonstrated in works like A Street in Nagybánya . His elder son Valér swung
towards Expressionism, while his two younger children, daughter Noemi, and son Beni,
branched out into tapestries and sculpture respectively; Noemi's Communist-leaning tenden-
cies are reflected in such works as Bricklayers and Collective Society ; among Beni's many
wonderful pieces, look out for the delightful Playing Boys .
Požarevačka Church
Kossuth utca 1• Daily noon-4pm, but opening times not reliable • 300Ft
Heading a little further up Kossuth utca, you'll encounter the first evidence of a Serbian pres-
ence just before the bridge over the Bükkos Stream in the form of an Orthodox church. Like
many others in Szentendre, the slender PožarevačkaChurch was built from stone in the late
eighteenth century to replace an older wooden structure in a grove of trees. The centrepiece
of the interior is the Byzantine-style iconostasis, dating from 1742.
Marzipan Museum
Marcipán Múzeum • Dumtsa Jenő utca 12, entry from Batthyány utca • Daily 9am-7pm • 500Ft
Beyond the Bükkos Stream, and the Tourinform office, you're firmly into the tourist zone.
First up is the chintzy Múzeum Cukrászda , behind which lies the Marzipan Museum show-
casing confections by the family firm Szabo, including portraits of Princess Diana, busts of
Emperor Franz Josef and Sisi, and a model of the Hungarian Parliament. It's a bit naff, but
good fun all the same.
