The engagingly hands-on Hungarian Railway History Park , or Hungarian Railway Mu-
seum, lurks in the freight yards of the XIV district. Its roundhouse and sidings house over
seventy locomotives and carriages from 1870 onwards, including the Árpád railcar that set
the 1934 speed record from Budapest to Vienna in just under three hours, and a 1912 teak
dining carriage from the Orient Express . Many of the museum's staff are ex-employees of
MÁV (Hungarian State Railways), proud of a tradition inherited from the Royal Hungarian
Railways. Here you can drive a steam train (1200Ft), luggage cart (600Ft) or engine sim-
ulator (800Ft), as well as operate a model railway (300Ft), and a turntable used for turning
locomotives around (free). Worth looking out for are the special event days, when further
activities are laid on, including the chance to ride a horse-drawn tram. The MÁV Nosztalgia
office next to platform 10 at Nyugati Station can also give information.

cemetery - reflecting the city's growth in the latter half of the nineteenth century - and it
was in a remote corner that Imre Nagy and 260 others, executed for their part in the 1956
Uprising, were secretly buried in unmarked graves in 1958. Any flowers left at Plot301 were
removed by the police until 1989, when the deceased received a state funeral on Hősök tere.
The plot is 2km from the main gates on Kozma utca - but note that the minibuses that shuttle
