In-Depth Information
ing north up the middle of the island takes you through the immaculately manicured Rose
Garden and on up to the ruined Dominican church and convent . Just beyond here, in the
shadow of the enormous Art Nouveau water tower , which rises some 66 metres, the Out-
door Theatre (Szabadtéri Színpad) hosts plays, operas, fashion shows and concerts during
summer. The café here makes a convenient stop for a beer and a snack.
A short way northeast of the tower is a Premonstratensian Chapel , whose Romanesque
tower dates back to the twelfth century, when the order first established a monastery on the
island. The tower's fifteenth-century bell is one of the oldest in Hungary. Heading towards
the northern tip, you can't miss the island's two hotels, the original, late nineteenth-century
Grand and its ugly twin sister, the Thermal . Beside the latter is a pretty Japanese Garden
with plants donated by the botanical gardens of Hokkaido University, and warm springs that
sustain tropical fish and giant water lilies.
