Quite different from the Pálvölgyi Stalactite Cave is the
Szemlőhegyi Cave
, with less con-
voluted and claustrophobic passages and no stalactites. Instead, the walls are encrusted with
cauliflower- or popcorn-textured precipitates. Discovered in 1930, the cave has exceptionally
clean air, and its lowest level is used as a respiratory sanatorium. After the tour you can view
a museum of cave finds and plans from all over Hungary.
For refreshment after the caves you should schedule in a stop at the
Daubner
patisserie at

a visit to the Szemlőhegyi Cave with the
Bartók Memorial House
or the Kiscelli Museum.

occupies a former Trinitarian monastery in a beautiful wooded setting. The mu-
seum's wide-ranging collection includes Baroque sculptures, craftsmen's tools, antique print-
ing presses and the 1830 Biedermeier furnishings of the Golden Lion pharmacy, which used
to stand on Kálvin tér. The blackened shell of the monastery's Gothic church makes a dra-
matic backdrop for exhibitions of contemporary art, classical
concerts
, animated film shows
and other events.
