SECURITY IN THE FRONTIER ZONE
The security situation in the frontier zone is liable to change at a moment's notice so make
sure you check out the latest information on the ground before you head into this area. In
addition to the relatively safe boat - hopping route, some travellers take the unofficial over-
land route from Puerto Obaldía via La Miel, hike across the border to Sapzurro in Colom-
bia, and then on to Capurganá. However, this is not advisable; although numerous people
make the journey without a hitch, a few never arrive.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: ARMILA
By boat Although only a 20min boat ride up the coast from Puerto Obaldía, landing on the
beach (there is no jetty) is frequently impossible due to rough waves (especially Dec-Feb and
sometimes July-Aug), or water spilling out of the river mouths following torrential rain.
On foot When conditions are too rough to travel by boat, you will need to make a moderately
strenuous uphill hike (1hr 30min-2hr) to reach Armila from Puerto Obaldía, accompanied by
a guide.
