In-Depth Information
BY BOAT
To Guna Yala There are regular though unscheduled boats that head west up the comarca to
Cartí (6hr; $100/person) from Puerto Obaldía, usually departing before 9am; ask around. You
should also be able to negotiate a price if you want to be dropped off at another community
along the way. Seas can be particularly rough and dangerous over the first three hours (espe-
cially Dec-Feb), even when conditions are considered “safe”. It is imperative that you check
the condition of the boat beforehand (see Package stays in Guna Yala ).
To Colombia Visitors travelling on to Colombia from Puerto Obaldía take a launch (1hr;
$15) to the resort town of Capurganá, from where a further ferry to Turbo and onward bus to
Medellín are possible.
IMMIGRATION
Before crossing the Colombian border, or arriving from Colombia, you'll need to visit im-
migration (daily 8am-4pm; $20/person charge to attend at other times), just off the park, for
an entry or exit stamp. You may also be asked for proof of onward travel out of the country
and evidence of the means to support yourself financially. You then need to swing by the po-
lice post, to register and have your belongings searched (see By boat from Colombia ).
ACCOMMODATION AND EATING
Pensión Condé Half a block from the park. Currently the only place to stay, with friendly
owners. Accommodation is rudimentary, comprising a mix of dark wooden or cement rooms;
bat hrooms are private or shared, though water is sporadic, and fan ventilation is from 6pm.
$12
Las Tres 'L' Corner of the park. Friendly restaurant with a pleasant patio where you can get
a decent breakfast and lunch, though options will be limited. Get there early for lunch since
food often runs out when visitor numbers are high. Daily 6.30am-4pm.
