Restaurante Julio José Main road, on the left, just before Mariato. Cosy little covered road-
side patio with a handful of wooden tables where you can tuck into a whole fish with pata-
cones and a smidgen of salad for only $3.50. Mon & Wed-Sun 11am-6pm.
MALENA
Anna's place Main road. Anna, the current chair of the local turtle conservation group, rents
out simple, fan-ventilated rooms in her house, across the road from the beach; she can also
arrange for you to watch turtles nesting in the season. $20
TORIO
Cabañas Torio Main road, just before Torio 6939 1436, torioresort.com . Hidden behind
a rather forbidding concrete compound wall in vaguely landscaped grounds, this resort offers
a handful of cramped, though clean, cabins, along with an open-air r anc ho restaurant. The
place lacks atmosphere and is overpriced but there's little else around. $38
White Spider Hostel 100m east of the main road at the bakery 6644 8508,
whitespiderhammocks@yahoo.com . Run by a former Peace Corps volunteer, this small
hostel can't be beaten for price, providing a small fan-ventilated dorm with comfortable
bunks (no mosquito net), shared open-air bathroom, kitchen, plus a slender wraparound bal-
cony with seating and hammocks from which to admire the surroun di ng hills. Free coffee and
wi-fi too, and tubing, walks and kayaking can be arranged. Dorms $7
