ACCOMMODATION
There are accommodation options to suit all tastes and all budgets in Panama City, but beds
are in short supply so it's a good idea to book ahead. If you're thinking of coming for Carnav-
al or any other busy holiday period, an advance reservation is an absolute must. Some mid-
range hotels offer special business rates (open to all) or reductions for internet bookings. Note
that hotels located on a major bus route, such as Vía España or Avenida Perú, can get noisy
from around 5.30-6.00am, when the traffic starts up and the horn honking begins, until late
at night, so ask for a room at the back on one of the higher floors. As for facilities , hot wa-
ter is standard in hotels (though not necessarily in hostels) and most have a/c and cable TV,
with many now offering wi-fi or other internet connections. If you're thinking of staying for
a week or more, or are with a family, you might consider an aparthotel , which can be bet-
ter value. These have kitchen/lounge/dining facilities but offer hotel services, such as clean-
ing, laundry and breakfast. Long-term rentals and corporate rates are often negotiable. Check
out airbnb.com or panamacasa.com for smart modern apartment rentals (from around
$600/week, $1700/month) in the banking district and its environs.
CASCO VIEJO
Most budget travellers opt for the backpacker hostels in Casco Viejo, the old colonial centre,
where there are also some very comfortable choices. The restoration of many of the area's
historic buildings and absence of buses make it a pleasant retreat from the congestion and
the pollution of the rest of the city. Lively bars and restaurants have also made it a popular
nightlife destination, though most places are relatively pricey.
