INTERFACE WITH SUPPLY CHAIN: INPUT-OUTPUT DIAGRAM
The first level of design establishes the function of the process in a supply chain and
defines an interface between process and supply chain. Each of the design steps at this
level is reviewed here and serves as an illustration of the use of the design matrix.
a. Scope
The main products, production capacity (average and dynamic: minimum and
maximum capacity level), and suitable available feeds (and supply dynamics)
must be specified, often in conjunction with a future production location. Exter-
nal targets and restrictions on the design of the process must be identified, such
as environmental, economic, societal, and legal ones. The (conceptual) bound-
ary of the process must be specified as well as the conditions of the streams that
