In-Depth Information
The Greenhouse AMERICAN/CARIBBEAN Fronted by big windows, this
sunny Waterfront restaurant attracts cruise-ship passengers who need a place to drop.
The food here is not the island's best, but it's satisfying if you're not too demanding.
The house specializes in chicken, often with exotic fruit flavors, such as mango-
banana chicken or coconut chicken. The excellent appetizers range from conch frit-
ters to stuffed jalapeño peppers. A kettle of soup is always on the stove, and you can
make a meal of the freshly made salads. The most popular item on the menu is the
big, juicy burger, the island's finest, made with certified Angus beef. There's a wide
selection of seafood, like the baked stuffed swordfish with garlic-cream sauce, plus
chef 's specialties such as baby back ribs.
The Greenhouse is also a prime nightlife spot. A daily happy hour from 4:30 to
7pm seduces party animals early. On Tuesday nights, after 9:30pm, the Greenhouse
turns into a hip nightclub attracting a 21-and-over crowd with two-for-one drinks.
This is the biggest event on Tuesday night in St. Thomas. On Friday nights, there's
live reggae music; on other nights, the sounds are selected by a DJ.

Bumpa's AMERICAN This deli-style, open-air joint isn't that special, but it's an
ideal choice for a good, filling, inexpensive breakfast or lunch. It's on the second level
of a little old West Indian house with a canvas-roof porch offering a panoramic view
of the harbor. Hordes of shoppers find this a favorite refueling stop. The cook prepares
good sandwiches and freshly made salads. Many patrons stop in just to order some ice
cream, one of the homemade pastries, or a refreshing lemonade on a hot day.

Café Amici ITALIAN/CARIBBEAN Located in an old stone alley cascading with
tropical plants, this is a good lunch spot in Charlotte Amalie. Select a seat at this
open-air cafe and dig into the day's offerings. There's always a delightful variety of
antipasti, salads, and a soup du jour. Pastas are also menu standards, including the
famous Rasta Pasta, with grilled vegetables, olive oil, garlic, and the chef 's “secret”
spices. The pizzas and sandwiches are the best in the center of town. We always
gravitate to the Clams Casino pizza, which has added flavorings of bacon, mozzarella,
and garlic. A rarer pizza is called Tropical, and it's served with a hot, spicy tamarind
sauce, grilled cheese, and both feta and mozzarella cheese. Vegetarians will be glad
to see the grilled portobello mushroom served with roasted red pepper and smothered
in melted provolone cheese and offered on homemade bread with pesto mayonnaise.

Gladys's Café CARIBBEAN/AMERICAN Antigua-born Gladys Isles is a
warm, gracious woman who makes a visit here all the more special. Gladys's Café is
housed in a 1700 pump house with a stonework courtyard that has a well (one of only
three on the island) in the middle. The good, standard breakfast here is the best value
in town. Lunch offerings feature various sandwiches, salads, and fresh seafood,
including an excellent swordfish and dumplings. Along with local lobster, shrimp, and
fish dishes, the house specialty is the hot chicken salad, made with pieces of sautéed
breast with red-wine vinegar, pine nuts, and dill, all nestled on a bed of lettuce.
