just across from the busy airport, 2 miles to the west of Charlotte Amalie, to which it
is linked by free shuttle service. Emerald Beach attracts businesspeople (for its loca-
tion) and families (for its resort-like feel) alike. All of the tastefully furnished rooms
face the sands, and each unit opens onto its own patio or oceanfront balcony. The
Sunday brunch here is one of the best in the area.

Best Western Carib Beach Resort This Best Western is recommended for its
location (only about a 3-min. walk from the good beach at Lindbergh Bay) and its
affordable oceanview rooms with private terraces. It's not the fanciest place on the
island, and it's not as good as Emerald Beach Resort (see review above), although the
two properties are only a 5-minute walk apart and guests can use the facilities there.
(A free shuttle runs between here and Emerald Beach.) Carib Beach is a favorite with
business travelers as well as some vacationers. The accommodations are housed in
pink-and-blue concrete structures, plus five cottages closer to the sea. The bedrooms
are comfortable, but not large. Room nos. 207 through 216 are the best. Ask for one
of the “Sea Wing” bedrooms, which open onto the ocean.

Island Beachcomber Hotel When this hotel opened back in 1956 it was the
first beachfront hotel in St. Thomas. In those days, everyone from Cecil B. DeMille
to Vivian Vance (Ethel Mertz from “I Love Lucy”) checked in. Much renovated and
expanded over the years, it has kept up with the times. This rather standard inn near
the airport is known for its affordable rates and its beautiful location near one of the
island's best sandy beaches, on Lindbergh Bay. Many guests are 1-nighters, staying
over between yacht charters. A beach-party atmosphere prevails here, and there's a
Tahitian aura to the place, created by tropical foliage, bird cages, bridges, and
thatched umbrellas. The well-maintained rooms are medium in size, with louvered
doors and jalousies, excellent lighting, and ceiling fans, plus a patio or porch. Accom-
modations face either the garden or the beach; those opening onto the water are
grabbed up first, so if you're interested, call well ahead.

East of Charlotte Amalie
MODERATE
The Green Iguana Crowning Blackbeard's Hill, in the center of Charlotte
Amalie, this is one of the best run inns on the island. There's a remnant within the
construction from a much older building, but much of what you'll see today is an
unpretentious concrete structure from the 1970s and 1980s. Bedrooms have pan-
oramic views of the harbor, the constantly arriving cruise ships, and the other Virgin
