MODERATE
At Home in the Tropics This is one of the best-run and most comfortable
B&Bs in Charlotte Amalie. Because it is a traditional West Indian house that is only
one room deep, each accommodation opens onto a panoramic view of Charlotte
Amalie harbor. The structure dates from 1803, when it was the barracks for the per-
sonal guard of the Danish governor. Handsomely restored, the bedrooms are attrac-
tively furnished in an airy Caribbean motif. The setting is in the midst of many of the
island's elegant mansions and gardens. Guests are given their own keys to the locked
gate for the courtyard property. The property is small and the swimming pool is deep,
so kids younger than 13 are discouraged.

Bellavista Bed & Breakfast This B&B is about as luxurious as it gets in
Charlotte Amalie. Nestled on Denmark Hill, the restored island estate overlooks
Charlotte Amalie and its historic harbor. It is only a 5-minute walk into town or a
7-minute drive to the premiere beach of Magens Bay. The romantic bedrooms have
an architectural charm with an eclectic tropical decor, and have names such as Bam-
booshay or J'ouvert Gardens. The former master bedroom, for example, is decorated
with jewel-toned fabrics and bamboo accents, the bed adorned with a demi-canopy
trimmed in mosquito netting. The choice rooms open onto private balconies with
views.

INEXPENSIVE
Bunker Hill Hotel The “bunk” in the name Bunker Hill is apt. This affordable
choice is suggested only if the other recommended inexpensive hotels are fully
booked, as is often the case. Bunker Hill Hotel is not in the safest district in St.
Thomas, so caution is advised, especially at night. But this centrally located lodge is
suitable for anyone who will sacrifice some comfort (you'll have to put up with some
street noise) for their budget's sake. Four rooms have balconies, and some offer a view
of the lights of Charlotte Amalie and the sea. The rooms are small, with simple fur-
nishings. One room has a microwave and sink, giving it a slight advantage over the
others.

ble. Rates include continental breakfast. Children 5 and under stay free in parent's room. AE, MC, V.

The Crystal Palace At this B&B you get the feeling of living in someone's grand
old private home. It occupies a structure that was rebuilt in 1932 on early-19th-
century foundations after a series of fires and hurricanes that left other parts of the
island homeless. Today, its owner is the kindly but crusty Ronnie Lockhart, president
of the St. Thomas & St. John Friends of Denmark Society, Inc., who showcases the
