renting A CONDO, APARTMENT, OR VILLA
For those who don't care for the resort
or hotel life, renting a condo, apartment,

times you can get a great deal. We've
found that Calypso Realty ( &   800/

calypsorealty.com) has the best offers,
especially on rentals from April to mid-

to $4,000 per week, with a 7-day
minimum stay.
Another source to check is McLaugh-

has rentals not only on St. Thomas but
also on St. John, St. Croix, and various
other Caribbean isles. A two-bedroom
villa begins at $2,000 per week in win-
ter, with off-season rates beginning
at $1,449.

Magens Bay Beach is a 15-minute drive north. Each guest room is located in a dif-
ferent part of the villa. You might go for La Mansion, the former library; La Casa de
Piedra, a former bedroom; or La Torre, the old pump house, which has been con-
verted into a modern lookout tower. Most of the general's personal effects were looted
over the years, but guests can still sleep in his four-poster Mahogany bed where he
bedded his many mistresses. The Mexican-style decor features clay tiles, rattan fur-
niture, and stonework. There is also a sun deck and small garden with hibiscus and
bougainvillea.

Windward Passage Hotel This hotel was created as a Holiday Inn, designed
around a courtyard with nightly entertainment. Even though its charm is not imme-
diately apparent, this well-managed and upgraded hotel enjoys the highest number of
repeat guests in St. Thomas. It is favored by business travelers and sports teams, as
many of its rooms with balconies overlook the adjacent Emile Griffith Park, a venue
for many baseball games. Rooms are well-furnished and contemporary. You might opt
for the oceanfront rooms, even though they have more noise from traffic, because you
get a panoramic sweep of the cruise ships in harbor. There is a shuttle to Magens Bay
Beach.
