Sandy Ground Estates These self-sufficient apartments are along the edge of a
beach on a 7-hectare (17-acre) hill site on the eastern part of Jost Van Dyke. The
complex rents two- and three-bedroom villas. One of the best accommodations is
constructed on a cliff, and seems to hang about 25m (82 ft.) over the beach. The airy
villas, each privately owned, are fully equipped with refrigerators and stoves. The
interiors vary widely, from rather fashionable to bare bones, but all have ceiling fans.
The living space is generous, and extras include private balconies or terraces. The
managers help guests with boat and watersports rentals. Diving, day sails, and other
activities can be arranged, and there are dinghies available. The rates quoted are for
1 week.

White Bay Villas & Seaside Cottages With its panoramic view of the
sea and ready access to the beach, this is a real discovery for couples or larger groups
seeking a first-rate, secluded retreat. Perched above the sea, all the cottages were
built by owner John Klein, who first visited the island in 1976. He fell in love, as most
do, and built his own villa here. Eventually, Klein expanded the property to include
several different accommodations options ranging from one- to two-bedroom houses
to a three-bedroom, three-bathroom villa accommodating up to eight guests. The
most desirable is the Plantation Villa, the largest in the complex, with a great room
and kitchen decorated with original murals depicting the island's culture.

Where to Eat
Abe's by the Sea WEST INDIAN Sailors are satisfied with a menu of fish,
lobster, conch, ribs, and chicken at this local bar and restaurant. Prices are low, and
it's money well spent. With each main course you also get peas, rice, and coleslaw.
Little Harbour. &   284/495-9329. Reservations recommended for groups of 5 or more. Dinner $24-
$50; nightly barbecue $30. MC, V. Daily 9am-11pm.
Ali Baba's CARIBBEAN Built of rustic-looking beams and unvarnished
planks, this restaurant welcomes diners and drinkers to a breeze-flooded veranda near
the edge of the harbor, immediately adjacent to the Customs house. Inside, you're
likely to meet Ali Baba himself (a member of the Baba family). Menu items focus on
fresh grilled wahoo, kingfish (served with butter and braised onions), tuna, and snap-
per. Other dishes include lobster, West Indian conch, lime-garlic shrimp, and barbe-
cued ribs or chicken. Drinks of choice include Painkillers and rum punches, but lots
of the boat owners who come here seem to prefer beer—the colder, the better. If
you're on the island in time for breakfast, drop in to join the locals for a tasty wake-up
meal and what one visitor called “damn good coffee.”
Great Harbour. &   284/495-9280. Breakfast from $10; main courses lunch $9-$12, dinner $18-$22. AE,
DISC, MC, V. Daily 9am-11pm.
