the beach. Interiors are stylish yet simple, often dominated by the same turquoise as
the seascape in front of you. There are also two large villas, with four or five bedrooms

Saba Rock Resort This is an idyllic retreat, perched on its own small cay
and reached by a free ferry. Yachties arrive on their private vessels. It is the ultimate
escapist retreat. Built by local craftsmen, the island was owned for 3 decades by Bert
Kilbride, the Caribbean's most legendary diver. Queen Elizabeth herself named him
“Receiver of Wrecks,” because he discovered some 90 shipwrecks in and around the
B.V.I. His scuba-diving “resort course,” created in the 1960s, is now taught around
the world. Bert died in 2008 at the age of 93, and the island's new owners decided
to turn his former private island into this rather luxurious compound of 1- and 2-
bedroom suites.
Just under .4 hectares (1 acre) in size, this laid-back boutique hotel offers tranquil-
lity and privacy in an area ideal for swimming, sailing, or exploring. Furnishings are
minimal and tasteful, with a breakfast of island fruits and fresh-baked pastries served
in an “over-the-water” dining room. Honeymooners prefer the Mustique House set in
the back of the island. You can dine on-site, sampling steaks grilled to order, succulent
pastas, and local seafood. Saba Rock has its own nautical museum with shipwreck
artifacts accumulated by Bert.

Ocean View Hotel This cinder-block building is definitely no frills, although
it is conveniently located near a shopping center and the Virgin Gorda Marina, and
is only a 15-minute walk from the beach. The rooms are clean and simply furnished,
often done in pastels with two single beds or a double bed. All are equipped with a
small bathroom. Children are welcome, and babysitting can be arranged. The rooms
are on the second floor, with a long porch, and downstairs is an inexpensive restau-
rant. There's also a garden in back.
