In-Depth Information
Spaghetti Junction ITALIAN Boaters like this popular place. It's located just
east of Road Town near several marinas, and the bar remains open long after the food
service has stopped. The Italian dishes, although standard, are quite good. Chicken
Parmigiana, beef Marsala, and several seafood items are featured. The frutta di mare
(medley of seafood) is always a winner—it's served in a light cream sauce over angel-
hair pasta. Other specialties include rack of lamb with garlic-laced mashed potatoes,
grilled fresh snapper topped with a mango purée, and the best lobster Thermidor on
the island. Look for the blackboard specials for other gems.
Baughers Bay, Road Town. &   284/494-4880. Main courses $18-$34. AE, MC, V. Mon-Sat 11am-3pm
and 6-10pm. Closed Sept to mid-Oct.

Capriccio di Mare ITALIAN Created in a moment of whimsy by the owners
of the more upscale Brandywine Bay Restaurant (see below), this local favorite is
small, casual, and laid-back. It's the most authentic-looking Italian cafe in the Virgin
Islands. At breakfast time, many locals stop in for an Italian pastry along with a cap-
puccino, or even a full breakfast. If it's evening, you might try the mango Bellini, a
variation of the famous champagne-based cocktail served at Harry's Bar in Venice.
Begin with such appetizers as piedini (flour tortillas with various toppings), then move
on to a selection of fresh pastas, the best pizzas on the island, or the well-stuffed
sandwiches. We prefer the pizza topped with grilled eggplant. If you arrive on the
right night, you might be treated to stuffed Cornish hen with scalloped potatoes.
Waterfront Dr. &   284/494-5369. Main courses $8-$18. MC, V. Mon-Sat 8am-9pm.
Midtown Restaurant CARIBBEAN Set in the heart of Road Town, this hangout
offers typical local fare. Options include curried chicken and mutton, conch soup,
pea soup, boiled bull-foot soup, stewed beef ribs, jerk chicken, and chicken roti. A
wide selection of fresh seafood is also on offer—specifics depend on the day's catch.
Most dishes come with your choice of fungi, plantains, or Caribbean carrots. A good
breakfast is also served here.
Main St. &   284/494-2764. Main courses $9-$14. No credit cards. Daily 7am-9pm.
Pusser's Road Town Pub CARIBBEAN/ENGLISH Standing on the waterfront
across from the ferry dock, the original Pusser's serves Caribbean fare, English pub
grub, and good pizzas. This place is not as fancy as Pusser's Landing, in the West
End (see below), nor is the food as good, but it's a lot more convenient and has faster
service. The complete lunch and dinner menu includes savory English pies ( Gourmet
magazine once asked for the recipe for the chicken-and-asparagus pie) and deli-style
sandwiches. John Courage ale is on draft, but the drink to order here is the famous
Pusser's Rum, the same blend of five West Indian rums that the Royal Navy has
served to its men for more than 300 years. Thursday is nickel-beer night.
Waterfront Dr. and Main St. &   284/494-3897. www.pussers.com. Reservations recommended. Main
courses $7.95-$20. AE, DISC, MC, V. Daily 10am-11pm.
Rita's Restaurant CARIBBEAN If you're looking for an inexpensive eatery serv-
ing local fare, stop at Rita's. The surroundings are simple, but the atmosphere is lively.
Breakfast ranges from standard American fare to local favorites such as fried fish or
saltfish, which is chopped up with a variety of spices and sautéed in butter. Both are
served with johnnycakes. The lunch menu includes pea soup, curried chicken, and
stewed mutton. Those who want a taste of the mainland can try the barbecued
chicken and ribs, sandwiches, or that old standby, spaghetti and meatballs.
