Quito's Ole Works Inn This hotel occupies the historic premises of a
300-year-old sugar refinery. It is a far less expensive alternative to the Sugar Mill
Hotel, although it doesn't have the cuisine or the facilities of that more famed prop-
erty. Still, it puts you right on the beach. It's set inland from Cane Garden Bay, and
has the best musical venue on Tortola—a rustic indoor/outdoor bar called Quito's
Gazebo (p. 213). The rooms are cramped but cozy; many rooms have water views,
some with balconies. The bathrooms are all a bit too small. The most romantic unit
is the large honeymoon suite in the tower. On the premises is a boutique-style art
gallery showing watercolors by local artists and selling souvenirs.
The in-house bar is a magnet for fans of modern calypso music, largely because it's
supervised by the hotel owner Quito (Enriquito) Rymer, who's the most famous
recording star ever on Tortola. Quito himself performs Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday,
and Sunday.

Rhymer's Beach Hotel This comfortable, unpretentious miniresort is composed
of a low-slung pink building next to a white-sand beach on the island's north shore.
The hotel's social center is a wide veranda where beach and bar life merge. The
simple accommodations have ceiling fans, basic kitchenettes, and small bathrooms.
The on-site restaurant (p. 213) is great for lobster or spareribs, and features weekly
entertainment by a local steel-drum band. Music lovers can also head for the bar of
the nearby Quito's Ole Works Inn (see above), where calypso star Quito Rymer per-
forms. In winter, there's a 3-night minimum stay.

Where to Eat
Most guests dine at their hotels, but if you want to venture out, try one the sugges-
tions below. Note: Many of the less expensive restaurants on the island serve rotis,
Indian-style turnovers stuffed with such treats as potatoes and peas or curried
chicken.

The Dove FRENCH/ASIAN This is one of the best places for haute cuisine
in town. You can begin by sipping a martini under the shade of the restaurant's mango
tree, or else drink in a luxurious bar while listening to jazz. The small menu changes
every week, but offers inventive dishes prepared from both locally grown and
imported ingredients. Seafood is flown in fresh daily, and sushi and soft-shell crab
