more modest fishing craft. This place competes with Village Cay for the boat owner
or sailor; we think Village Cay is superior. Accommodations are within a two-story
motel-style building, where windows overlook open-air hallways. Each unit contains
a refrigerator and comfortable (albeit bland) furniture. The heart and soul of the
resort is the 180-slip marina, headquarters to at least three yacht-chartering compa-
nies and permanent home to many fishing and pleasure boats. The restaurant, Peg-
leg Landing (p. 212), is a reasonable choice for standards like steak and grilled fish.

Prospect Reef Resort This low-rise resort stands on 4.4 tropical hectares (11
acres) of an oceanfront estate, which boasts such features as a freshwater junior
Olympic-size pool, plus all sorts of watersports, and the best selection of hotel restau-
rants on island, even a marina for visiting yachties. This is one of the largest resorts
in the British Virgin Islands, rising above a private harbor in a compound of two-story
concrete buildings scattered over a sloping, landscaped terrain. The panoramic view
of Sir Francis Drake Channel from the bedrooms is one of the best anywhere, though
there's no beach to speak of. All of the accommodations have private balconies or
patios, and some of the larger units are suitable for families, complete with kitchen-
ettes, living and dining areas, and separate sleeping areas. The food at the hotel's
restaurant is a combination of Continental specialties and island favorites.

Sebastian's on the Beach On the north shore of Tortola, this casual, laid-
back retreat opens right onto the sands. The water here is one of the best places
in the B.V.I. for surfing action. The hotel really comes alive on weekends at the
beach bar when you can dance under the stars, listening to the live music of some
of Tortola's best fungi and steel bands. This hotel is located at Little Apple Bay,
about a 15-minute drive from Road Town. The rooms are housed in three build-
ings, with only one on the beach. All come with rattan furniture and balconies or
porches. You should be careful here about room selection, as accommodations vary
considerably. Most sought after are the beachfront rooms, only steps from the surf;
they have an airy tropical feeling, with tile floors, balconies, patios, and screened
jalousies. The rear accommodations on the beach side are less desirable—not only
do they lack views but they're also subject to traffic noise. Also, avoid the two noisy
bedrooms above the commissary. The dozen less expensive, rather spartan rooms
in the back of the main building lack views, but they're only a short walk from the
beach. Sebastian's Seaside Grill (p. 214) overlooks the bay and has live enter-
tainment on Saturday and Sunday.
