Environmental Arts Project, dedicated to manual work, environmental conservation,
and self-development. The end result is a fine collection of local mahogany serving
boards, tables, wall hangings, and clocks. Sections of unusual pieces are crafted into
functional, artistic objects.

Whim Museum Store This unique store offers a wide selection of gifts, both
imported and local. They also carry historical books, local art, and West Indian furni-
ture. And if you buy something, your money goes to a worthy cause: the upkeep of
the museum and the grounds (p. 179). There is also an associated store in downtown
Christiansted, with different inventory, at 58 Queen St. ( &   340/713-8102 ). 52 Estate

ST. CROIX AFTER DARK
St. Croix doesn't have the nightlife of St. Thomas. To keep abreast of the newest
nightspots, you might consult the publication St. Croix This Week, which is distrib-
uted free to cruise-ship and air passengers and is available at the tourist office.
Try to catch a performance of the Quadrille Dancers , a real cultural treat.
Their dances have changed little since plantation days. The women wear long
dresses, white gloves, and turbans, and the men wear flamboyant shirts, sashes, and
tight black trousers. When you've learned their steps, you're invited to join the danc-
ers on the floor. Ask at your hotel if and where they're performing.
Note: Women entering bars alone at night in Christiansted or Frederiksted should
expect some advances from men. It is generally assumed here that a woman alone at
a bar is seeking companionship and not necessarily just looking to have a drink and
survey the scene. Nonetheless, women are fairly safe in bars providing they know how
to deal with some leering. It is not wise to leave the bar alone and walk the lonely
streets to your hotel. Take a taxi back—it's worth the investment.
The Club & Music Scene
Blue Moon This hip little dive, best known as a local stop for visiting jazz musi-
cians, is not only a good bistro but also the hottest spot in Frederiksted on Friday,
when a five-piece ensemble entertains until midnight. On Sunday, a jazz trio per-
forms. Dinner is served Tuesday to Saturday 6 to 9pm. 7 Strand St. &   340/772-2222.
The Bar Scene
The Palms This romantic bar lies within a resort about 3 miles northwest of Chris-
tiansted (p. 161). It caters to resort guests or visitors, gay or straight. You can sit at
tables overlooking the ocean or around an open-centered mahogany bar, adjacent to
a gazebo. The perfect accompaniment to the night out is one of their classic tropical
drinks. It's open Monday to Saturday 9am to midnight, Sunday 9am to 11pm. 4126 La
Grande Princesse. &   340/718-8920.
