In-Depth Information
Within 2 miles, Lowry Hill Road merges with Route 82 again. Fork left, and follow
it as it turns into Hospital Gade and leads to the center of Christiansted. To your right
will appear:
6 Fort Christiansvaern
You'll see it as you pull into the parking lot in front of Christiansted's tourist
office (Old Scalehouse).
SHOPPING
Christiansted is the shopping hub of St. Croix, though it does not compare with
Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas. The emphasis here is on hole-in-the-wall boutiques
selling handmade goods. Most of the shops are compressed into a half-mile or so.
Between Company Street and the harbor are many courtyards, antique buildings,
arcades, and walkways riddled with shops, many of which are smaller branches of
parent stores on St. Thomas. Along the boardwalk is the King's Alley Complex, a
pink-sided compound filled with the densest concentration of shops on St. Croix.
In recent years, Frederiksted has also become a popular shopping destination. Its
urban mall appeals to cruise-ship passengers arriving at Frederiksted Pier.

ANTIQUES
Estate Mount Washington Antiques The owners are always there and
you'll be able to browse through the best treasure-trove of colonial West Indian
furniture and “flotsam” in the Virgin Islands. But you'll have to call first for an
appointment. Afterward, you can walk around the grounds of an 18th-century
sugar plantation, Estate Mount Washington (p.  179). 4 Estate Mount Washington.

historic core, with a two-story, big-city scale and appeal. It's the store where island
residents prefer to shop because of the hip, urban styles. Men's items are on the
street level, women's upstairs. The inventory includes everything from Bermuda
shorts to lightweight summer blazers and men's suits. The store carries Calvin Klein,
