8 Government House
The European-style garden here contains a scattering of trees, flower beds, and
walkways. The antique building that surrounds the gardens was formed from the
union of two much older town houses in the 1830s. The gardens are open Mon-
day to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
Exit the same way you entered, turn right, and continue your descent of Queen Cross
Street. At the first street corner (King St.), turn left and you'll see:
9 Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church
This church was established in 1734. Take a moment to admire its neoclassical
facade.
Continue walking southwest along King Street. Within 2 blocks is the:
10 Limprecht Gardens and Memorial
For 20 years (1888-1908), Peter Carl Limprecht served as governor of the Dan-
ish West Indies. Today, an occasional chicken pecks at seedlings planted near a
Danish-language memorial to him.
At the end of the park, retrace your steps to Queen Cross Street, and go left.
One very short block later, turn right onto Strand Street, which contains some
interesting stores, including at least two different shopping arcades. The streets
will narrow, and the pedestrian traffic will be more congested. Pass beneath the
overpass belonging to a popular bar and restaurant, the Comanche Club.

Continue down the meandering curves of King's Alley. Within 1 block you'll be stand-
ing beside:

You can end your tour here by strolling on the boardwalk of the waterside piers.
Frederiksted
This former Danish settlement at the western end of the island, about 17 miles from
Christiansted, is a sleepy port town that comes to life only when a cruise ship docks
at its pier. Frederiksted was destroyed by a fire in 1879, and the citizens rebuilt it by
putting wood frames and clapboards on top of the old Danish stone and yellow-brick
foundations.
Most visitors begin their tour at russet-colored Fort Frederik, at the northern end
of Frederiksted next to the cruise-ship pier ( &   340/772-2021 ). This fort, completed

Alexander Hamilton was an American
statesman from the West Indies who
served brilliantly in the American Revo-
lution. He wrote many of the articles
contained in the Federalist Papers and
became Secretary of the Treasury to
George Washington. He was noted for
both his literary and oratorical skills.
Though he was born on the island of
Nevis, Hamilton spent his adolescence
in St. Croix.
