pulverized seaweed), mauby (fermented from rainwater and tree bark), and ginger
beer are only some of the options. The menu features boiled fish, conch, lobster in
butter sauce, stewed goat, stewed Creole-style lobster, and pork chops with greens
and yams. Desserts include carrot cake, cheesecake, and Key lime pie. Because the
place has been here for 30 years, it's known by virtually everybody on the island.

Paradise Café DELI/AMERICAN This neighborhood favorite draws locals
seeking good food and great value. Its brick walls and beamed ceiling were originally
part of an 18th-century great house. New York-style deli fare is served during the day.
The homemade soups are savory, and you can add grilled chicken or fish to the freshly
made salads. At breakfast, you can select from an assortment of omelets, or try the
steak and eggs. Dinners are more elaborate. The 12-ounce New York strip steak and
the freshly made pasta specialties are good choices. Appetizers include mango chicken
quesadillas and crab cakes.

In & Around Frederiksted
MODERATE
Blue Moon INTERNATIONAL/CAJUN The best little bistro in Frederiksted
becomes a hot, hip spot during Sunday brunch and on Friday nights when it offers
live entertainment. The 200-year-old stone house on the waterfront is a favorite of
visiting jazz musicians, and tourists have discovered (but not spoiled) the fun. It's
decorated with funky, homemade art from the States, including a trash-can-lid res-
taurant sign. The atmosphere is casual and cafelike, with a frequently changing
menu. You might begin with the Lunar Pie, with feta cheese, cream cheese, onions,
mushrooms, and celery in phyllo pastry, or the artichoke-and-spinach dip. Main
courses include the catch of the day and, on occasion, Maine lobster. The clams
served in garlic sauce are also from Maine. There's also the usual array of steak and
chicken dishes. Save room for the brownie ice cream.
