MODERATE
The Bombay Club INTERNATIONAL This is one of the most enduring restau-
rants in Christiansted. It's concealed from the street by the brick foundations of an
18th-century planter's town house. You enter through a low stone tunnel and eventu-
ally end up near the bar and the courtyard that contains many of its tables. The food,
though not overly fancy, is plentiful, full of flavor, and reasonably priced. The best
items include the catch of the day and regional dishes such as conch, beef filet, and
pasta. The island's best fresh-lobster pasta is served here. On a recent visit, we
enjoyed the grilled fish with sun-dried tomatoes and roasted garlic butter, and fettuc-
cine with sliced prime rib.
5A King St. &   340/773-1838. Reservations recommended. Main courses $14-$21. MC, V. Mon-Fri
11:30am-4pm and 5:30-10pm; Sat-Sun 6-10pm.
RumRunners CARIBBEAN This open-air restaurant sits right on the board-
walk and offers some fabulous views to accompany the excellent dining. The ambi-
ence is purely Caribbean—the sound of waves in the background can put even the
tensest of people at ease. Sunday brunch is even accompanied by a steel-pan band.
Excellent choices here include the New York strip steak; the fresh, broiled whole
lobster; the Caribbean pork tenderloin served with a grilled banana; and one of the
house specials, baby back ribs slow-cooked in island spices and Guinness. The
younger vacationers can pick from the children's menu.
In the Hotel Caravelle (p.  152), on the boardwalk at Queen Cross St. &   340/773-6585. www.rum
runnersstcroix.com. Reservations recommended. Main courses $15-$34. AE, MC, V. Mon-Sat 7-10:30am,
11:30am-3pm, and 5:30-9:30pm; Sun 8am-2pm and 5:30-9:30pm.
Savant CARIBBEAN/THAI/MEXICAN/FUSION The spicy cuisines of
one region and two nations are combined into a marvelous fusion to wake up your
palate. The stylish bistro atmosphere is a delightful place to dine, but know that the
chefs take the food seriously. We gravitate to the tantalizing Thai curries; most of
them are mildly spiced for the average diner, but you can request the chef “to go
nuclear” if that is your desire. The red-coconut-curry sauce is one of the best we've
ever had on the island. Enchilada lovers will find much happiness here too, especially
in the seafood enchiladas. The maple-teriyaki pork tenderloin is one of the chef 's
specialties and deserves the praise heaped upon it. There are only 20 candlelit tables,
so call for a reservation as far in advance as you can.
4C Hospital St. &   340/713-8666. Reservations required. Main courses $14-$39. AE, MC, V. Mon-Sat
6-10pm.
INEXPENSIVE
The Avocado Pitt AMERICAN/VEGETARIAN This is an all-around good
choice for breakfast or lunch while you explore the shops and attractions of Chris-
tiansted. One of the town's best breakfasts is served here, as patronage by locals
reveals. Their omelets and pancakes are rib-sticking fare and full of flavor. Lunch
options include “Kahuna burgers” and tuna sandwiches, but you can also find more
creative offerings, including tofu with sautéed vegetables or fresh yellowfin tuna.
Vegetarians rejoice for the veggie or soy burgers along with freshly made salads and a
variety of protein-enriched fruit smoothies. The staff will also pack you a boxed lunch
for your tour of the island or all-day sailing adventure. The cafe also serves as
