In-Depth Information
lunch in Frederiksted is a bit dicey if cruise ships have arrived. If so, the few restau-
rants here may be packed with your next-door neighbors (the ones you went to St.
Croix to avoid).
At night, dining becomes more of a problem if you want to venture out. If you're
not familiar with the badly lit roads and driving on the left, driving to the restaurant
of your choice might present some difficulties. Of course, the easiest way to go is to
have your hotel call a taxi and let the driver deliver you to a restaurant. Agree upon
the hour you're to be picked up, and he'll even return for you, or the restaurant will
summon a cab for you if you don't want to lock yourself into a time frame. Most of
the resorts are along the north shore, and dining at a different resort every night
(unless you're on a meal plan) is easily arranged by taxi.
If you're staying at one of the small hotels or guesthouses in and around Chris-
tiansted, you can even walk to your restaurant of choice. If you're at a hotel in
Frederiksted, the night is yours, as the cruise-ship crowds have departed and there is
a less expensive, earthier, and more laid-back feeling in the small dining rooms here.

EXPENSIVE
The Galleon FRENCH/NORTHERN ITALIAN This restaurant, which over-
looks the ocean, is a local favorite, and deservedly so. It serves northern Italian and
French cuisine, occasionally including osso buco, just as good as that dished up in
Milan, although lunchtime offers include tacos and burgers. The dinner menu always
offers at least one local fish, such as wahoo, tuna, swordfish, or mahimahi, or you
might try the fresh Caribbean lobster. You can order a perfectly done rack of lamb,
which will be carved right at your table. There's an extensive wine list, including many
options sold by the glass. Music from a baby grand accompanies dinner several nights
a week, and you can enjoy guitar music on Thursday and Saturday.

Saman Dining Room AMERICAN This informal enclave is located in the
Carambola Beach Resort. The restaurant seats 100 under a vaulted cathedral ceiling.
The chefs focus on chicken, beef, and the fresh catch of the day. Tangy appetizers
include jumbo prawn cocktail, while the dinner specialties include rib-eye steak. For
a touch of island flavor, opt for tuna, which is quickly seared and served with chutney.
Steaks are handled with care and grilled to your preference; lamb and veal, although
flown in frozen, still turn out tasty.

The Terrace INTERNATIONAL This is the island's finest dining room in a
hotel. Menu items vary but are likely to include grilled local lobster cakes, served with
lemon-caper beurre blanc and accented with fresh tarragon. You might also opt for
the poached shrimp with a fresh lime cocktail sauce or a hand-cut New York strip
steak in a tamarind dark-rum sauce. The delectable pecan-crusted roast pork tender-
loin is served sliced over pesto mashed potatoes and red-eye gravy. The roast rack of
lamb and the Thai barbecue salmon are classics.
