The Frederiksted Hotel This waterfront four-story inn is a good choice for the
heart of historic Frederiksted. It's in the center of town, about a 10-minute ride from
the airport. Much of the activity takes place in the outdoor tiled courtyard, where
guests enjoy drinks. The cheery rooms are like those of a motel on the U.S. mainland,
perhaps showing a bit of wear, and with good ventilation but bad lighting. They're
done in a tropical motif of pastels and are equipped with small fridges. The best (and
most expensive) rooms are those with ocean views; they're subject to street noise but
have the best light. The nearest beach is Fort Frederik, a 3-minute walk away.

residences with pools; many are on the beach. Rentals range from one-bedroom units
to seven-bedroom villas. In winter, prices per week range from $1,050 to $15,000,
reduced in summer to $750 to $12,500. A 7-night minimum is usually imposed.
Cane Bay Reef Club Directly on the Caribbean Sea, this is one of the little
gems of the island, offering large suites, each with a living room, a full kitchen, and
a balcony. It's on the north shore, about a 20-minute taxi ride from Christiansted,
fronting the rocky Cane Bay Beach near the Waves at Cane Bay. Sunsets are beauti-
ful, and the snorkeling's great. The decor is breezily tropical, with cathedral ceilings,
overhead fans, and Chilean tiles. Bedrooms are spacious, cool, and airy, with comfort-
able beds; living rooms also contain futons. There's a golf course nearby, and there's
a dive shop within walking distance. You can cook in your own kitchen, barbecue, or
dine at the in-house restaurant, Bogey's.

Club St. Croix Flowery gardens and a quarter-mile beach in front of the resort are
the big attractions here. This is a well-managed, upscale apartment complex with a
pool and three tennis courts. It's a slightly better choice than its nearest competitor,
Sugar Beach condominiums (see review below). Set in a three-story, cream-colored
building, each private apartment has its own kitchen, one or two bedrooms, and good
views from Buck Island to the glittering lights of Christiansted.
