In-Depth Information
Kronegade Inn This small inn offers a certain down-home comfort at rea-
sonable rates. Some guests call it the “best-kept secret in Christiansted.” The inn has
suites and guest rooms, each with full kitchen. The decor is in a tropical motif, with
white-rattan furnishings. The beds are comfortable, and the small bathrooms are
tidily maintained. The inn doesn't offer food service, but a number of restaurants and
cafes are nearby.

Frederiksted
MODERATE
Cottages by the Sea On the western end of St. Croix, these isolated cottages
are located on a wide and sandy beach right outside Frederiksted, about 6 miles from
the airport, attracting honeymooners and families since the 1950s. Some cottages are
made of cinder blocks, and others are wood. The paneled interiors are a bit worn and
the whole look is a bit spartan, but reasonably comfortable. Most bedrooms have
king-size or twin beds, with tight, compact bathrooms. All cottages have private
patios. The hotel has kayaks and snorkel equipment free for guests to use at the
beach. Because of the location, you'll have to depend on taxis or rent a car to get
around the island. On the other hand, you can walk over to the center of Frederiksted
for restaurants, bars, and shopping.

Sand Castle on the Beach This beachside boutique hotel has a gay and lesbian
following, among others. It lies just half a mile from the town's shopping and dining
facilities. Rooms are comfortably furnished but small; all have good mattresses, tiny
private bathrooms, and extras such as kitchenettes and coolers. There are two fresh-
water swimming pools (one is clothing optional), a hot tub, and a beachfront patio,
where you'll often encounter men in G-strings. The resort's restaurant, Beach Side
Café, has great atmosphere, right on the beach.

INEXPENSIVE
The Breakfast Club Here you'll get the best value of any bed-and-breakfast
on St. Croix. This comfortable place combines a 1950s compound of efficiency apart-
ments with a traditional-looking stone house that was rebuilt from a ruin in the
1930s. Each of the units has a cypress-sheathed ceiling, off-white walls, a beige-tile
floor, and summery furniture. An on-site chef specializes in banana pancakes and will
prepare lunch or dinner on request. When there is a full house count, occasional
“party nights” are staged, featuring recorded music.
