Unwanted Attention
Sexual harassment can be a problem in
certain bars in Charlotte Amalie. Any of
the major resort hotels are generally
safer, and any place we've recommended
can be viewed as hospitable (though, of
course, creeps can be found in any bar).
Cabana Bar There's piano bar entertainment Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday at
this scenic spot overlooking the yacht harbor. It's a popular gathering ground for resi-
dents and visitors alike, who are mainly in their 30s and 40s. You can dance from 7
to 10pm on Thursday and Saturday. Entertainment varies from month to month, but
many nights are devoted to jazz. It's open daily from 5 to 10pm. Bluebeard's Castle.

Epernay This stylish watering hole, with a view of the ocean, adds a touch of
Europe to the neighborhood. You can order glasses of at least six different brands of
champagne, or vintage wines also come by the glass. Appetizers include sushi and
caviar, but there are also main courses, plus tempting desserts such as chocolate-
dipped strawberries. A mature, sophisticated crowd seeks out this spot. It's open
Monday to Thursday 11:30am to 11pm, Friday 11:30am to midnight, and Saturday
5pm to midnight. Rue de St. Barthélemy, Frenchtown. &   340/774-5348.
Great Bay Lounge If you're way out on the island's easternmost tip, you can visit
this elegant but cozy lounge, an airy bar-cum-clubhouse on the grounds of the Ritz-
Carlton. One of four restaurants on the grounds of the hotel, it's the most appropriate
for late-night down-winding, and as such welcomes a large percentage of managers
from other island resorts. Cocktails and glasses of wine cost from $9 to $21 each,
platters of food from $10 to $42. Although it's open daily 10am to around 11pm, we
find it's at its most appealing from 8pm on. The Ritz-Carlton, 6900 Great Bay. &   340/775-

The Greenhouse Set directly on the Waterfront, this bar and restaurant is one of
the few nightspots we recommend in the heart of Charlotte Amalie. You can park
nearby and walk to the entrance. If you want to start early, come for dinner (p. 73).
Each night, a different type of entertainment is featured, ranging from reggae to
disco; there's also a daily happy hour from 4:30 to 7pm. Tuesday nights are the biggest
draw with two-for-one drinks; there's a live reggae band on Friday nights. Almost all
of the 30-something patrons are visitors. The Greenhouse is open daily 11am until
the last customer leaves. Veterans Dr. &   340/774-7998. www.thegreenhouserestaurant.com.
Hull Bay Hideaway A 25-year-plus mainstay on the island scene, this funky
surfer bar has a laid-back, casual atmosphere, attracting, in the words of a bartender,
“people from all walks of life, from boaters to condo renters.” Many locals and regu-
lars like to spend lazy Sunday afternoons here. It's a cheap place to eat—hot dogs and
hamburgers are served until 3:30pm. After 4pm, you can order affordable main
courses in the restaurant, costing $5 to $18, including the catch of the day and the
chef 's pork stew. There is live music on Saturday nights beginning at 7pm and on
Sunday afternoon from 4pm. There are also some gambling machines and a volleyball
court, if that's your thing. Daily hours are 10am to 10pm. 10 Hull Bay. &   340/777-1898.
Iggies Bolongo This place functions during the day as an informal, open-air res-
taurant serving hamburgers, sandwiches, and salads. After dark, it presents karaoke
