3½ hours Along the A19, A6 and A38. Three hours From Chartres to Paris St-Laz-

Site. The monuments and museums are a major draw, while the city's culinary

The beautiful walled city of Avignon has two Unesco-listed monuments: an impress-
ive papal palace and an amazing medieval bridge . Further afield, Provence is
littered with monuments left over from the days of Gallo-Roman occupation. Admire
the engineering of the Pont du Gard , the world's largest and best-preserved Ro-
man aqueduct, then put yourself in a gladiator's shoes in the imposing amphi-
theatres of Orange and Arles . All can be easily reached by rail or road from Avign-
on.
