The Age of the Novel
The 19th century was the great era of the novel in France. French writers took to
the form with gusto. Victor Hugo (1802-85) penned historical epics such as
Les
Misérables
and
Notre-Dame de Paris
(The Hunchback of Notre Dame), while Alex-
andre Dumas (1802-70) wrote swashbuckling tales of derring-do such as
The
Three Musketeers
and
The Count of Monte Cristo
, and Jules Verne (1828-1905)
pioneered the sci-fi genre with his fanciful tales of moon rockets, submarines and
round-the-world balloon flights.
