Recent Cinema
French cinema has produced some significant hits over the last decade, most not-
ably big-budget versions of the Astérix comics, and the knockabout spoofs of comic
actor Jean Dujardin, such as the
OSS 117
spy films. However, relatively few film-
makers have been able to translate their domestic appeal to an international audi-
ence.
There have been some exceptions, though, including the quirky animation
Bel-
leville Rendez-Vous
(The Triplets of Belleville; 2003) and
Les Choristes
(The Chor-
us; 2004), set in a school for troublesome boys in 1949. More recently,
La Môme
(known overseas as
La Vie en Rose
), a biopic of Édith Piaf, scooped the Best
Actress Oscar for Marion Cotillard at the 2008 Academy Awards.
2008 also saw a French film win the Palme d'Or at Cannes for the first time since
1987. Laurent Cantet's
Entre Les Murs
(The Class) used real pupils and teachers to
portray a year in the life of a school in a rough Parisian neighbourhood.
