Common aperitifs include kir (white wine sweetened with cassis), kir royale
(Champagne with cassis) or pineau (cognac and grape juice), while brandies such
as Cognac and Armagnac often appear as after-dinner digestifs .
In many French bars (especially the further south you go), you'll often see people
taking a shot of spirits with their coffee - eaux de vie (literally 'waters of life') and
pastis ( a 90% proof, aniseed-flavoured spirit) are the most popular (and potent).
