The world's second-smallest state (a smidgen bigger than the Vatican), is as fam-
ous for its tax haven status as it is for its glittering casino, thriving performing-arts
and sports scene (Formula One, world-famous circus festival and tennis open), and
royal family (its members regularly feature in gossip magazines).
In terms of practicalities, Monaco is a sovereign state but there is no border con-
trol. It has its own flag (red and white), national holiday (19 November), postal sys-
tem (good for the card home to grandma) and telephone country code ( 377),
but the official language is French and the country uses the euro even though it is
not part of the European Union.
