Les Arènes de Nîmes
Long before the rich and famous arrived, the Romans recognised the seductive
charms of southern France. The region is studded with many well-preserved Ro-
man monuments, including this almost-intact amphitheatre in Nîmes ( Click here ).
Built to seat over 10,000 spectators, it served as the stage for gladiatorial contests
and bloodthirsty shows, and is - controversially - still used for bullfights to this day.
