Provence & the French Rivi-
era
There is no more sunny and celebrity-rich part of France than the south. So get set
for heart and soul seduction. Travelling here means sensual sauntering through
scented lavender fields and vineyards, around vibrant morning markets groaning
with fresh produce, and along paradisaical shores lapped by clear turquoise waters.
Roughly speaking, this region splits into three: east is the iconic French Riviera,
wedged between glitzy star-spangled Cannes and megalomaniacal Monte Carlo in
the millionaire principality of Monaco. In the middle is Provence, hinged on the coast
by the wildly contrasting fishing ports of St-Tropez and Marseille, and tethered inland
by a stash of Roman vestiges, hilltop villages and exceptional natural landscapes.
Languedoc lies west, an upcoming region that travellers tramp to first and foremost
for the walled city of Carcassonne and its bewitching witch's-hat turrets.
