Abbaye de Fontenay
Though the majority of France's great abbeys were torn down during the Revolu-
tion, a few have survived the centuries relatively intact. The fascinating Fontenay
Abbey ( Click here ) is tucked away in the heart of the Burgundy countryside, and is
one of Europe's best-preserved Cistercian monasteries. Wandering the tranquil
grounds it's possible to visit the monks' barrel-vaulted dorm, the monastery refect-
ory, the abbey church and even an early smelting forge.
