Dune du Pilat
This colossal sand dune (

cachon and is still spreading eastwards at up to 4.5m a year (swallowing trees,
roads and even a hotel in the process). Hum the theme tune from

as you scale it for a memorable panorama over the Bassin d'Arcachon - it's the
closest you'll get to the Sahara without leaving Europe.
