Bordeaux & French Basque
Country
For wine aficionados, nowhere lights up the imagination quite like Bordeaux. For
centuries this has been the undisputed heartland of French viticulture (winemaking),
and the region is littered with some of the most illustrious names from the world of
wine. But while the fruits of the vine are undoubtedly the main reason for a visit to
the Bordeaux region, they're far from the only one.
South of Bordeaux, France's Atlantic Coast unfurls through a string of sandy
beaches, sparkling bays and beautiful towns, all of which are worth a visit in their
own right. There's Arcachon - famous for producing some of France's finest oysters
- and Biarritz, a seaside getaway since the belle époque, now the centre of a thriv-
ing surf culture. And then there's the French Basque Country, a fiery and independ-
ent region that fizzes with a passion, energy and culture all of its own.
