Skiing
If you've caught the downhill bug in Chamonix, you'll love the world-class skiing
found throughout the Alps. Here's a quick run-down of our favourite resorts.
1 TROIS VALLÉES
(elevation 1450-2300m; www.les3vallees.com ) The Three Valleys covers the
world's largest ski area, comprising three side-by-side resorts: snow-sure Val
Thorens , Europe's highest ski area at 2300m; Méribel (1450m), intermediate
heaven and a favourite for Brits abroad; and ritzy Courchevel (1550m to
1850m), which includes some knee-trembling black couloirs for the brave and
excellent off-piste terrain, and is favoured by the rich and royal.
2 VAL D'ISÈRE
(1850m; www.valdisere.com ) Unlike many resorts, Val d'Isère has a community
feel that remains long after the snows have melted. Along with nearby Tignes
(elevation 2100m), Val d'Isère forms part of the huge Espace Killy skiing area,
named after triple Olympic gold medallist Jean-Claude Killy.
3 LES PORTES DU SOLEIL
(1000-2466m; www.portesdusoleil.com ) The Gates of the Sun covers 12 villages
along the French-Swiss border, including charming Morzine (1000m), trendy,
car-free Avoriaz (1800m) and family-friendly Les Gets (1172m).
4 LES DEUX ALPS
(1600m; www.les2alps.com ) Year-round skiing on the Glacier du Mont de Lans ,
glorious powder and a party atmosphere make Les Deux Alpes a resort with alti-
tude. Hardcore skiers come from far and wide to tackle the near-vertical Vallons
de la Meije descent in La Grave , 21km east.
5 ALPE D'HUEZ
(1860m; www.alpedhuez.com ) This purpose-built resort has 245km of groomed
pistes that range from dead-easy to death-defying: at 16km La Sarenne is
