2 ROCAMADOUR
( tourist office 05 65 33 22 00; www.rocamadour.com ) Clinging to the side of a
sheer cliff 51km east of Sarlat, this otherworldy town looks like it's tumbled from
The Da Vinci Code . It's been an important pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages
thanks to its supposedly miraculous Vierge Noire (Black Madonna).
3 BRANTÔME
( tourist office 05 53 05 80 63; www.ville-brantome.fr ) With its five medieval
bridges arcing over the River Dronne, Brantôme is often known as the 'Venice of
the Périgord'. The abbey's 11th-century belltower is allegedly the oldest in
France. It's 27km north of Périgueux.
4 ST-CIRQ-LAPOPIE
( tourist office 05 65 31 29 06; www.saint-cirqlapopie.com ) Teetering high
above the River Lot, this minuscule clifftop village has one of the most magical
settings in the Lot, but beware the crowds in summer. It's 25km east of Cahors.
5 COLLONGES-LA-ROUGE
( tourist office 05 55 25 47 57; www.ot-collonges.fr ) With its skyline of conical
turrets and rust-red buildings, this entire village has been classed as a historic
monument. It's 18km southeast of Brive-la-Gaillarde.
Vézère Valley
Flanked by limestone cliffs, subterranean caverns and ancient woodland, the
Vézère Valley is world famous for its prehistoric sites, notably its incredible collec-
tion of cave paintings - the highest concentration of Stone Age art found in Europe.
Most of the key sites are around the towns of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil and Mon-
tignac, which are both well set up for visitors. Visitor numbers to most caves are
strictly limited to avoid damaging the paintings, so it's wise to book at least a couple
of days in advance, especially in high summer.
